Expectations and Highlights...
My original expectation coming into this program was that I would have a more minor role in the classroom, taking small groups of students at a time and dealing with them on a one on one basis. I have learned that while many schools are different, the role that my fellow auxiliars and I have had at Maximo Trueba is more of a leadership position during the class. Typically, I will prepare a presentation or lesson for that day including videos, songs, and activities on subject matter that they have been covering during the week whilst I am not there. This approach to the class plays toward my performance oriented personality and I think that my students and teachers have come to enjoy my “performances” each week!
As previously mentioned, I have come to deal with many different kinds of students in my time as a language assistant, but some of the most rewarding experiences have been becoming friends with some of my students and sharing our love for certain TV shows, foods, and fashions, as well as, seeing a need for attention in a student who might be acting out in the classroom as a result of neglect either from their families or peers, and seeing their attitude towards the classwork improve with just a little extra attention in the classroom.
